“You see fewer short shots, ‘candles’, net outs” – Myskina on how tennis has changed

Former Russian tennis player Anastasia Myskina in an interview with , she talked about the main trends that are now noticeable in this sport.

At the beginning of December, Myskina, together with Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Vesnina and Nikolai Davydenko, took part in the North Palmyra Trophies tennis tournament in St. Petersburg as coaches.

– What has changed in the world of tennis in the last 15 years?

– Speed - the girls began to play faster, more actively. The ball flies low over the net. Even recently in St. Petersburg, when I watched the match between Nastya Potapova and Nastya Gasanova at the Palmyra Northern Trophies tournament, I once again caught myself thinking about it. Of course, everyone has become more athletic. We see less short shots, “candles”, exits to the net. But it’s just in time for athletics – our look just got stiffer.

Do men have the same story?

“It’s a different planet for me. Sometimes I don’t even quite understand if their tactics affect the game or if they place more importance on whether you can take the opponent’s serve or keep yours. But, overall, I don’t follow the men’s tour very closely. I’m more interested in women. It’s closer and more convenient.

Myskina ended her career in 2007. She is the first tennis player from the former Soviet Union to win a Grand Slam tournament in women’s singles.
