Wimbledon 2022 winner, Kazakh tennis player Elena Rybakina supported the decision to allow the Russians to participate in the tournament this year in a neutral status.
On Friday, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which is the organizer of Wimbledon, announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status and under certain conditions. In particular, athletes will be prohibited from publicly expressing their support for the CBO at the tournament, receiving funds from states, and also having state-owned companies controlled by Russia and Belarus as sponsors.
– They played in all tournaments in this status, starting from Grand Slam tournaments, they were not allowed only at Wimbledon. They play like that, without (national) flags. I think it’s the right decision,” Rybakina told a press conference.
Last year, the AELTC suspended the participation of Russian tennis players at Wimbledon due to the situation in Ukraine.
Rybakina lost to Czech Petra Kvitova in the WTA 1000 Series tournament final in Miami on Saturday.
