Prior to that, the pair faced each other four times and the current head-to-head record is two wins for each tennis player.
Kudermetova won both matches in 2019, in Nuremberg and Wuhan.
However, more recently, Alexandrova got the better of her grass-court compatriot in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, beating her in the final in three sets. Last year, Alexandrova also beat Kudermetova in the Dutch tournament.
Although Kudermetova is not known as a strong grass player, her last performance at ‘s-Hertogenbosch was an exception. And this week she has already proven that what she did in the Netherlands was no accident.
In the first round, she challenged China’s Qinwen Zheng by beating the world No. 25 in straight sets. And then she sensationally beat the world’s first seed and second racket Arina Sobolenko.
Kudermetova started the game with two breaks in the first three games and easily won the set 6-2. There was an early break in the second set, but Sobolenko bounced back and brought the matter to a tie-break, which was dominated by Kudermetova. She was perfect on the pitch and Sobolenko made a mistake three times.
Alexandrova plays in Berlin after defending her title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where she beat Kudermetova in the final.
And it looks like she has returned to good form in Berlin, beating world No. 15 Lyudmila Samsonova in Germany and then WTA No. 7 Cory Gauff. In the first set there was a struggle, and Aleksandrova won it thanks to a break in the ninth game – 6:4. And the second set was completely one-sided and the Russian didn’t let her opponent win a single game at all.
