Ukrainian beat Sakura Hosogi in three sets
Ukrainian tennis player Katerina Volodko defeated Japanese Sakura Hosogi in the first round of the W100 tournament in Tokyo.
It took the Ukrainian three sets to defeat the wild card holder, who is 42 ahead of her in the WTA rankings. The fight lasted almost two hours.
Katerina took the first game with a dry score, spending only 20 minutes on it. However, Hosogi managed to return to the game and bounced back in sets, converting a set point on the third attempt. Everything was decided by the third game, in which Volodya won a decisive point on someone else’s serve.
During the fight, the Ukrainian filed four aces and made eight breaks. Earlier, Katerina successfully overcame two rounds of qualification in the capital of Japan.
Volodko is ranked 277th in the WTA rankings. Her next opponent in Tokyo will be another representative of the host country, world No. 232 Haruka Kaji.
