Dayana Yastremskaya criticized the situation in world professional tennis. According to the Ukrainian, the WTA is just pretending that nothing is happening.
Our athlete said that he repeatedly complained to the organization about his rivals in Russia for their support for Putin and the war in Ukraine, but he did not receive any response.
“Who most needs to be reminded that there is a war going on is the WTA. They are the first to forget there is a war going on. What irritates me the most is their stance on allowing Russian tennis players to participate in tournaments.
Tennis is one of the few sports where this situation occurs. And this is what drives me to despair. Moreover, some Russians do not even hide their support for the aggression against Ukraine. I have reported many times on WTA that Russian women publicly support Putin. They promised to look, but nothing – silence.
The WTA keeps promising to investigate such incidents and take any steps, but then there is silence. Unbelievable. No one talks about it anymore.
But I will not be silent, I will continue to talk about it. Why aren’t there many Russians in other sports? Because these are ordinary organizations. But not the WTA. It cannot be said that tennis is a weapon in our hands. The mission of sport is to unite people, communities, so I think about tennis when I step on the court. But if I play against the Russians, I think I want to have a pistol with me.
How do we feel when we have to play with the Russians? Imagine being attacked and having to go to court with a representative of that country. How would you feel if you found out that many people died in your country? Genocide is happening in Ukraine, and it is unfair that we have to continue playing games with them,” BTU quoted Yastremska as saying.
