Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva talked about getting along well with a German woman Laura Siegmund when playing in pairs.
Zvonareva and the German won the WTA final tournament in Cancun in doubles, beating American Nicole Melicar-Martinez and Australian Ellen Perez in the final (6:4, 6:4). Thanks to the tournament, Zvonareva earned more than $300,000, and her profit reached almost $1 million during the season.
— It is not always possible to find the partner on the ground who will understand you the first time. Often relationships are built over several months: we then form a team. With Laura, everything happened very quickly: we began to understand each other literally after two matches. We see the game the same way, we evaluate what is happening on the pitch, we have a good mutual understanding of what we want to do.
We have different playing styles as a couple: I play more from behind, she plays more from the front. And that makes our team so united. Because it is very important when in a pair each player knows his role, and we have distributed them clearly and quickly. This allows us to win many matches. And even in the matches that we lose at the beginning, we find ways to win,” Zvonareva was quoted as saying by “Championship”.
For Zvonareva, 39, this pairs title was the 16th of her career and the fourth of the season.
