Athletistic/Tennis. The biggest WTA tournament of the week – the Charleston Open – continues. Ekaterina Alexandrova, who reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open last week, was eliminated in the second round by Taylor Townsend. Therefore, only two Russians remained in Charleston – Daria Kasatkina and Veronika Kudermetova, who will play their 1/8 finals today.

Daria Kasatkina-Angelina Kalinina

Kasatkina beat Ashlyn Kruger 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 to advance to the third round of the Charleston Open. Kalinina proved to be stronger than the world’s first racket, Caroline Wozniacki, defeating her with a score of 6-3, 6-2. She also beat the Dane at the Miami Open a few weeks ago.

In personal meetings against Kalinina, Kasatkina has a 3-1 advantage. Their final match at last year’s Eastbourne International tournament ended with a Russian victory in straight sets. This will be the first time that tennis players will fight on clay. They both play pretty well on this surface. The French Open is one of the most successful tournaments for Kasatkina, and she won her first WTA title at the Charleston Open in 2017.

Kalinina finished second at last year’s Italian Open and reached the clay court final in Budapest. Although Kasatkina has been inconsistent this year, her results have been better than those of her opponent. The Russian has a good chance of continuing her performance in Charleston.

Forecast: victory of Daria Kasatkina.

Betris Addad Maya – Veronica Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova performs unsuccessfully in 2024. She was eliminated in the 1/8 finals in Brisbane by Anastasia Potapova, then sensationally lost in the first round at the Australian Open to Victoria Golubic, in Abu Dhabi to Heather Watson and in Doha against Daniel Collins. In Dubai we then managed to win against Dayana Yastremskaya, but then immediately suffered a defeat against Sorana Kirsti.

The Masters in the USA was also a failure. In Indian Wells, Kudermetova lost in the second round to Angelique Kerber, and in Miami she was knocked out in the first round by Wang Xinyu. In Charleston, Veronica won against Shelby Rogers and it was only her 4th victory of the season, even though it was already April. Kudermetova has lost to low-level opponents, so it’s unlikely we’ll expect much from her today against Beatrice Addad Maya.

Although the Brazilian tennis player has inconsistent performances this season. She was able to reach the semi-finals in Abu Dhabi, but otherwise performed averagely. At the Australian Open there was elimination in the third round, Indian Wells and Miami in the second and Doha, Dubai and San Diego in the first.

Kudermetova won her only match against Addad Maya in the quarterfinals of Tokyo 2022, but today the Brazilian tennis player will still be the match favorite.

Forecast: Béatrice Addad Maya wins.
