French tennis player Alizé Cornet announced that she would retire after Roland Garros at the age of 34.
Cornet holds the record for most consecutive Grand Slam titles. The French Open will be Cornet’s 69th major.
– In exactly one month, I will play my last Roland-Garros and end my career in front of the public. It’s strange to say these words out loud. I thought about it for a long time. But announcing it officially is something. This is the right time because it is the result of a long process that lasted more than two years. And now, over the past few months, my thoughts have become clearer. I feel like it’s just time.
Obviously, I don’t want to be pushed to leave, because I want to make the decision to leave myself. I feel like I have less desire (to perform). For me, it’s the time to say goodbye to tennis,” Cornet said in an interview with Canal+ Sport.
Cornet is ranked 107th in the world rankings. The Frenchwoman has won WTA tournaments six times, her highest position being 11th place in February 2009.
Roland-Garros 2024 will take place from May 20 to June 9.
