Tabilo’s confession after reaching the semi-finals in Rome: ‘I tried to keep my straight face, because I was very nervous’

The Chilean will be at least 25th in the world next Monday.

Alejandro Tabilo becomes the first Chilean to reach the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 since Fernando González in Rome in 2009. Now, 15 years later, Jano is making history again in the same tournament.

A special course, where he beat tennis players of the caliber of Novak Djokovic (1st) and Karen Khachanov (18th) and where he managed to establish himself for the first time in his career among the 25 best players on the planet. These milestones, added to having reached his best performance in a Masters 1000 tournament, put him in ecstasy.

He confirmed it on the official broadcast once his quarter-final match against Zhang (56th) was over. “It’s simply incredible. I’m trying to figure this out right now. So happy. I felt pretty good on the pitch . Pretty solid. I just try to do my job and play my best tennis,” said the southpaw.

Of course, he was honest about the emotions felt in cases like this, where the stakes are high. “It’s definitely the best tennis of my life, but I was trying to keep a straight face on the pitch, because I was very nervous. Every time I had to go and close the game I felt more tired so I was just trying to have a smile and I think serving so well at the end helped me close the match,” admitted the new world number 25.

Finally, he also thanked the people who accompanied him during this dream week in the Italian capital. “Definitely two unforgettable weeks for me with the whole team, my brother, my best friend, my girlfriend who arrived today, I am surrounded by great people and happy to move forward here,” he concluded.
