With Jarry, Tabilo, Barrios and without Garin: Chilean tennis secures its cards for the Olympics

This Monday, the official list of the rings event confirmed the qualifications. It remains to be defined who will be the duo for the doubles.

Chile will have three tennis players at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The discipline which has given the country the most medals in the history of the competition, confirmed this Monday its qualifications for the edition which begins on July 27.

The list of 64 tennis players who will be present at the tournament, which will take place in the same facilities as Roland Garros, is formed by the canals. The first is the most massive, since 56 places are allocated by world ranking, provided that there are only four places maximum per country, so the list runs when tennis players from nations with more representatives appear. Two places are also reserved for former Olympic or Grand Slam champions and six for performances in continental tournaments (Pan American Games, Asian Games and African Games).

In the case of the Chile team, its representatives will be Nicolas Jarry, Alejandro Tabilo and Tomás Barrios , which entered by various means. While the first two did so via the ATP rankings (20 and 24 respectively), the Chilanejo will be present in Paris for the silver he won at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Among them also three The pair participating in the doubles must be defined , because by not having four representatives, Chile will only be able to compete with a single duo. Logic says that it should be Tabilo and Barrios, who have competed in recent years in this modality in the Davis Cup series, but nothing is defined.

A name that will not be in the French capital is that of Christian Garin , who will have to wait until at least Los Angeles 2028 to be able to make his debut with Chile at the Olympic Games. His fall in the world rankings (115th) and his non-participation in Santiago 2023 leave him no chance of qualification. A hard blow that undoubtedly affects the northerner, who abandoned Tokyo 2020 due to the instability of the season and the conditions established by the state of pandemic. “They will not allow me to live the true experience of what the Olympic Games mean,” he justified on this occasion in a press release. In this same text, he also admitted: “Without a doubt, Paris 2024 will be a big goal in my career. » “.

In the case of women, there will also be no representatives for this edition, replicating what happened in Tokyo 2020 when Alexa Guarachi was excluded from the Games by a few points on the world list. Now, with the American-born doubles player retiring, the chances of getting a national player were nil.

With only 46 days to go until the start of the competitions, the national delegation currently has 31 qualifiers for the Olympic Games, including the case of Svenja Grimm (equestrian show jumping), who is currently appealing for her place in the TAS.

Regardless, the Chilean team hopes that in the coming weeks this number will continue to increase and exceed 40 representatives. Figures such as Martina Weil (400 meters), Joaquín Niemann (golf) and Gabriel Kehr (hammer) will be a few weeks away from being able to confirm their presence at the event.

On the other hand, leaders of the country like Francisca Crovetto (skeet shooting), María José Mailliard (canoeing), Yasmani Acosta, Martín Vidaurre (MTB cycling) and the Abraham sisters (rowing), have already secured their place for Paris.
