Alcaraz dominated the final. The Spaniard returned his serve only once and won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
With this victory, Alcaraz achieved a number of accomplishments:
Carlos Alcaraz is the youngest player to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season
With his latest Wimbledon victory, Carlos Alcaraz became only the sixth player to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season.
At 21 years and 70 days, he is also the youngest player to achieve this feat. Last month, he beat Alexander Zverev in five sets to win his first French Open title. Before Alcaraz, Bion Borg was the youngest player for three consecutive years – 1978 (at the age of 22), 1979 and 1980. Other tennis players include Rod Laver, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz is the second player to win the first four Grand Slam finals in the Open era after Roger Federer.
The victory at Wimbledon earned Carlos Alcaraz his fourth Grand Slam title, he won every final.
Only Roger Federer can boast such a feat. He won his first seven Grand Slam finals – three Wimbledons and two Australian and US Opens each. His first defeat came in the 2006 French Open final against Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz has won titles at the 2022 US Open, 2023 French Open and Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024.
Alcaraz is the third youngest to defend a Wimbledon title
After successfully defending his Wimbledon title at the age of 21 years and 70 days, Carlos Aclaras became the third youngest player to achieve the feat.
The youngest player to successfully defend a Wimbledon title was Boris Becker, who did so twice in 1985 and 1986 at the age of 18. He beat Kevin Curren and Ivan Lendl respectively in two finals.
Bjorn Borg defended his title at Wimbledon 1977 at the age of 21 years and 26 days.
Alcaraz is one of only three players to have a winning percentage of at least 90% at Wimbledon.
Carlos Alcaraz now has an impressive 18-2 win-loss record at Wimbledon, which translates to a 90% win rate. He entered the tournament with an 11-2 record, but his seven wins in two weeks have increased the percentage. The youngster has now not lost a match in this arena in two years.
Only two other players can boast a winning percentage of 90% or better at Wimbledon. However, both have played far more Grand Slam matches on grass than Alcaraz. Pete Sampras’ record of 63-7 puts him on par with Alcaraz’s mark of 90%, while Bjorn Borg tops the list with an incredible 51-4 record, good for a winning percentage of 92.4%.
In the women’s singles, Barbora Krejcikova lifted the trophy by beating seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the final. It was the Czech Republic’s first title on grass.
With this victory, Krejcikova also achieved a number of accomplishments:
Krejcikova is one of two active female tennis players to have won both the French Open and Wimbledon.
Along with former world number one Simona Halep, Barbora Krejcikova is the only active female tennis player to have won singles titles at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Halep’s triumphs came in 2018 (French Open) and 2019 (Wimbledon), while Krejcikova’s triumphs came a little later. She won the clay-court tournament in 2021 and has now added Wimbledon to the mix. In total, the Czech has nine Grand Slam tournaments, seven of which are in doubles. Two of them are at Wimbledon in 2018 and 2022.
Second fewest matches won in a season before Wimbledon triumph
Barbora Krejcikova had won only 7 of her 16 matches before Wimbledon. Only Venus Williams won fewer matches (6) in 2000 before winning the grass-court to be determined.
Krejcikova’s best performance before Wimbledon 2024 was reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. The Czech then suffered five straight defeats before reaching the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic.
Following her Wimbledon triumph, Krejcikova now has 14 wins from 23 matches this season.
Krejcikova – the second lowest ranked tennis player to win Wimbledon
At the time of her participation in Wimbledon 2024, Barbora Krejcikova was ranked 32nd in the world. By winning the tournament, the Czech became the second lowest-ranked tennis player to win a singles title at Wimbledon since the inception of the WTA rankings in 1975. Below Krejcikova was only Marketa Vondrousova, who was ranked 42nd at the time of her victory at Wimbledon 2023. Aside from the two Czechs, Venus Williams is the only tennis player to have won a Grand Slam on grass while ranked below the top 30 in the WTA rankings.
Interestingly, both of Barbora Krejcikova’s Grand Slam tournaments were won when she was ranked outside the top 30. The Czech was ranked 33rd in the world when she won the 2021 French Open, beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final.
