Athletistic/Tennis. The men’s singles draw for the 2024 Canadian Open has been finalized and we could see some interesting matches despite the absence of players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. World number one Jannik Sinner will be looking to defend his title in Canada and, given his current form, there is every chance he will succeed.

Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Kasper Ruud are players capable of winning in Montreal when they are at their best, as are tennis players like Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Stefanos Tsitsipas. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how things could play out in the men’s singles at the Canadian Open.

First half:

Ranked players: (1) Jannik Sinner, (3) Daniil Medvedev, (5) Andrey Rublev, (8) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (10) Tommy Paul, (12) Hugo Umbet, (15) Alejandro Tabilo, (16) Karen Khachanov

Expected semi-final: Jannik Sinner vs Daniil Medvedev

Analysis: Defending champion Jannik Sinner is in that half and could face Francis Tiafoe or Alejandro Tabilo in the third round. Even if he does, the Italian should be able to beat any of them. The Italian could potentially face fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev or 10th-seeded Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals, though Denis Shapovalov or Nicholas Harry shouldn’t be ruled out.

Rublev or Paul could both pose a threat to Sinner, but the Italian has shown impressive hard-court form in 2024 and should be able to beat either of them to reach the semi-finals. On the other side of the draw are formidable tennis players Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Although the likes of Karen Khachanov and Hugo Humbert are also capable of displaying impressive tennis.

Although Tsitsipas has already reached the Canadian Open final, Medvedev’s form in 2024 has been significantly better so far and he should pick up his tenth win against Stefanos and reach the semi-finals of the Montreal Open. The semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev should be an exciting one, especially since the Russian beat the Italian in their last meeting in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. However, if Sinner is in form, he should win and reach the Canadian Open final.

Semi-final predictions: Jannik Sinner will beat Daniil Medvedev.

Lower half:

Ranked players: (2) Alexander Zverev, (4) Hubert Hurkacz, (6) Casper Ruud, (7) Alexander Zverev, (9) Taylor Fritz, (13) Holger Rune, (14) Felix Auger-Aliassime

Semi-final scheduled: Casper Ruud vs Grigor Dimitrov

Analysis: This half features second-seeded Alexander Zverev, who could face Jack Draper in the second round. If the German beats the Briton, he should be able to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open without too much trouble, given his current form and that of his potential opponents (Holger Rune, Fabian Marozan, Milos Raonic and Pablo Carreno Busta). Next up, Zverev will likely face sixth-seeded Casper Ruud or ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz, although Sebastian Korda or Cameron Norrie are unlikely to be counted out.

Ruud has already beaten Alexander Zverev on hard court and he has a good chance of doing the same if he is at his best and reaches the semi-finals in Montreal.

On the other side of the draw are Hubert Hurkacza, Grigor Dimitrov, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime. All four are capable of reaching the quarter-finals. But Hurkacz has had some fitness issues since Wimbledon and that could hamper him. Of those four, Dimitrov seems more preferable.

Semi-final predictions: Casper Ruud defeated Grigor Dimitrov

Expected Champion: Jannik Sinner.
