The US Open was the last major tournament for all three big names. And they all finished their performances in the first round:
Diego Schwartzman
Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman has announced that he will retire from tennis at the next Argentina Open in February 2025. This means that the 32-year-old has played his last US Open of the year. Schwartzman has failed to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open, French Open or Wimbledon without going through the qualifying round.
The former world number 8 also had to go through a qualifying round to reach the main draw in New York. Schwartzman managed to qualify, but then lost to another veteran Gael Monfils in the first round – 7:6, 2:6, 2:6, 1:6.
He has a good record in the tournament, reaching the quarter-finals in 2017 and 2019.
Daniel Collins
Danielle Collins shocked the tennis world when she announced in January that she would retire from the sport at the end of the season due to ongoing health issues related to rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis. Since then, she has reached the pinnacle of her tennis career, winning titles at the WTA 500 Charleston Open and the WTA 1000 Miami Open.
Collins has not changed her mind about retiring, but she has failed to successfully host the US Open. The American’s best performance in New York came in 2022, when she reached the fourth round. She was seeded ninth in the women’s singles this year and lost to world number 49 Caroline Dolehide in the first round, 6-1, 5-7, 4-6.
Dominique Thiem
The former world number three’s last professional tournament will be the Vienna Open in October. At the US Open, he received a wild card, but ultimately lost in the first round to Ben Shelton 4:6, 2:6, 2:6.
Dominic Thiem’s biggest career success came at the US Open, where he defeated Alexander Zverev to win his first and only Grand Slam at the tournament in 2020. The Austrian has also reached the final of three other Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros twice and the Australian Open once.
