The captain spoke about the losses due to the injury of the country’s number two and Tomás Barrios. However, he was confident of what the team can do this weekend against Peru in Lima.
The Chilean Davis Cup team is already in Lima to face Peru on Saturday and Sunday for World Group I. The winner of the series will receive a ticket to qualifying for next year’s final, making it a key series in a bid to return to the elite of world tennis.
Captain Nicolás Massú will have Alejandro Tabilo, Nicolás Jarry, Gonzalo Lama, Matías Soto and Diego Fernández. Tomás Barrios and Christian Garin will not be there due to injury. Precisely the Viñamarino lamented the losses. “It’s a shame, but these are things that happen to athletes. I hope they recover quickly enough to be able to perform on the circuit , who need it for their ranking, for their confidence, and I hope that in the next Davis Cup we can still be with healthy players. So I have more options. But today those who are there are prepared, they want, they are in a good mood, I trust them a lot, and that’s good when you have several players who can solve the absences “ he claimed.
“The more players we have, the better. I hope it goes well for us, I’m sure. We have experienced players who have played in very important Davis Cups. Every Davis Cup that passes they have more experience and that’s a plus for us.” he expressed, referring to Tabilo, Jarry and Lama.
The Chilean coach appreciated the option of arriving early in the Peruvian capital. “It’s important to have arrived on Saturday and to be on the pitch on Sunday. That’s why I wanted to arrive well in advance, because some Chilean and Peruvian players were playing on the cement court. Try to have several days to practice double shifts, so you can do different exercises. The arrival of Duglas (Cordero, the PF) is also important to be able to work on the physical part and what is good is that, as the Davis Cup starts on Saturday 17, we have a whole week to prepare well. I think the time is enough and it gives me peace of mind that day by day they will improve” he stated.
Regarding the weather in Lima, Massú pointed out that “the conditions are slow”. “A lot of players who are in the team have played here several times, they know the club, they know the conditions and they like it, so it’s also important for us” he added.
Compared to the rival, the double Olympic champion showed his respect. “It’s a tough team with good players. (Juan Pablo) Varillas is number one and recently entered the top 100 for the first time in his career, which is a significant achievement for any tennis player. He too has experience, he played with us many years ago in a Davis Cup in Santiago. That’s where I saw him play for the first time,” he recalls.
He also highlighted the other members of the team: “They have young players who have done well in youth and others who have experience on the circuit, both in singles and doubles. It’s going to be a difficult Davis Cup, there will surely be a lot of people to support them. What’s good is that we have players with a lot of experience, who have played in important Davis Cups in the past and who have had a good time. It will be a big challenge for us, we are very confident They train very well. There is a great predisposition of our players to train and represent Chile. For me, every Davis Cup is the maximum”.
