Olympic short track champion Semyon Elistratov told that he enjoys running at competitions, following news of Russian athletes being admitted to international starts, but details are still lacking.
On Sunday, Yelistratov won the all-around final of the Russian Cup, which was held in Rybinsk.
International Olympic Committee (IOC ) had previously announced that it was ready to consider the possibility of admitting Russians to international competitions, from which they were suspended in the context of the situation in Ukraine.
– Semyon, how do you distribute your forces over the season? Top form – for the Russian championship? Cup final – a showdown?
– I will say sincerely: I try to take advantage of the competition, of the races. You are unlikely to be in top form all the time. But there was a task to win the Russian championship in the all-around, and it worked, there was a task to do with dignity in the final of the Russian Cup – it worked, task number three – to perform adequately in the Russian Championship in single distances, I hope it will also work. There are no global plans, there are Russian competitions, we are preparing for them calmly. The coach leads to great starts, and I try to get the most out of the races, especially since the competition is good, – said Elistratov “”.
– In Rybinsk, from what distance did you get the most buzz?
– Two, probably. From 1500m to 3000m, at 3000m I liked how the other guys tried their hand tactically. The guys from Rybinsk ran well, the guys from St. Petersburg ran well. It was interesting, there was no course of the same type, there was a tactical struggle and a reconstruction. It was great, great, thank you to all the competitors. It was just awesome.
Do you pay attention to IOC statements or are you just doing your job?
– Both. I am what Thomas Bach says. This concerns me directly, I follow the evolution of events, which I cannot influence. Now in standby mode. How long it will last, I don’t know. It seems to me that now is not the time to make loud statements. Like a year ago, there are now more questions than answers.
– The Russian Championship will be held in Ufa. Is there any activity on this topic in your hometown?
– I hope the city will help publicize the contest. The Ufa school, I’m sure, will connect. Of course, we want the ice palace to be completely filled with spectators, we run for them, and that’s important to popularize the sport. For my part, I will try to please with the results, but doing PR at the same time is very difficult. Here you have to choose. For now, I choose to run fast.
