Biathlete Romain Surnev told that he was unable to compete for medals in the 40-kilometer race of the Alfa-Bank Russian Championship in Uvat due to a serious fall and a broken pole.
Surnev led the race after the first shooting stage and remained in the top ten in the first half of the race. However, upon arrival, the biathlete showed only the 13th result and, with six penalties, lost to the winner of the race, Karim Khalili, 6 minutes and 19 seconds.
— At the very beginning of the race, you made a breakthrough. Did you choose Ustyugov’s tactic of running away from everyone from the very beginning?
“I didn’t think about running away at all, I just walked at my own pace, as comfortable as I felt.” Yes, from the outside it may seem that I was trying to enter there from the first meters in the style of Ustyugov, but in fact this was not the case: the guys were walking extremely calmly, but I decided I would go at least at a training pace.
– What happened next?
— Everything was going well until I fell at the twentieth kilometer, before the last rest. On the last descent the ski got stuck in the snow and I fell head first into the snow, losing a lot of time. The fall was quite hard, at that moment I even thought about going down, because the pain was causing discomfort, but later it got better.
After that, at the turn, I had to blow the snow out of the handlebars, but the snow got into the bore, and because of this, the first blow “spit” nowhere. While I was falling, while I was getting up, I was losing speed, while still at the line I was blowing into my rifle… I probably lost a minute.
Further in the pile, I also broke my stick after the milestone, again I thought I had to go, but it’s good that the Tyumen service was nearby and gave me their stick spare, for which I thank him very much. In the end, it turned out that “I started for health and ended for peace,” Surnev told .
