French President Emmanuel Macron said he considered the five-time Olympic biathlon champion Martin Fourcade a suitable candidate to lead the organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps, L’Equipe reports.
The French Alps, based on the results of the vote, were approved as the site of the XXVI Olympic Winter Games in 2030 at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris. It is specified that the Games will be held in France, provided that the host country provides the IOC with guarantees for the holding of the competition before October 1.
— An organizing committee for the Olympic Games will have to be created, which will be overseen by the French National Olympic Committee, in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the French Paralympic Committee. But I understand that Martin Fourcade could become a mountain Tony Estanguet, and that would be great. We need an organizing committee that would benefit from the support of the sports world, because that guarantees continuity, a certain form of neutrality, Macron said, quoted by L’Equipe.
On 11 August, the Summer Olympics ended in Paris. The Games Organising Committee was led by three-time Olympic rowing and slalom champion Tony Estanguet. Fourcade was elected to the IOC in 2022 as a representative of the Athletes’ Commission.
The last Winter Olympics were held in Beijing in February 2022. The next Winter Olympics in 2026 will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
