The Glory and the Green Magic met in the South American League. The match was played at Palacio Peñarol, home of the Uruguayan team, and the Instituto forged a strong victory that allowed them to face the group stage leader, Titanes de Barranquilla. Although Gimnasia lost, the tournament was a double elimination tournament and therefore they are still in the race for the South American title.
Gymnastics (CR) 68 – Institute 81
The match started with a very close match between both teams, Gloria led in the opening quarter by just one unit. Gimnasia started better in the second period thanks to its point guard Joshua Webster (10 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals). Patagonia’s Giant overturned the result and went into the break four points ahead of Instituto. Great effectiveness in shots behind the arc meant that the team led by Leo Villagrán finished first on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Nicola Pomoli (17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), with his triples, regained the lead in goal. The Institute gained an advantage over its rival by nine points in the third quarter. Based on good defense and simple attacking resolutions, they continued to increase the distance. Lucas Victoriano’s men built an advantage of 18 throughout the final period, sealing the win. They finally won the match by 13 points.
How is the calendar today?
Instituto will face the Titanes de Barranquilla because with the win, Glory remains standing in the competition. Gimnasia has a more complicated present, although it still has a chance to qualify, it will have to play the double elimination against the team that loses the match between San José and the other team will be determined in Peñarol – Caribbean Storm.
