ONE Championship champion wants to fight Makhachev

Two-division ONE championship champion Christian Lee (17-4) has announced his desire to fight UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

“I saw a video where Islam Makhachev challenged me to a fight,” the 24-year-old said after winning the ONE Fight Night 4 tournament in Singapore. “He invited me to the UFC to fight him for the lightweight title. I would love to have that fight. Let’s do this. UFC lightweight champion vs ONE championship champion. Let’s see who really is the best lightweight in the world.

Lee, 24, defeated Kamran Abbasov (23-6) by fourth-round TKO to claim the welterweight title. Lee now holds the ONE Lightweight and Welterweight Championship belts.

Makhachev replied that Christian “better focus on the next challenger, Saigid Izagakhmaev, and then we’ll see how good you are.”

Islam Makhachev last entered the octagon in October of this year at UFC 280, where he defeated Charles Oliveira via second-round submission. He has 23 wins and one loss. The champion flew to Singapore to support teammate Saigid Izagahmaev, who played against Shinya Aoki on the ONE 163 card. The Russian won in the first round by technical knockout.

To Lee’s claim that he is the best lightweight in the world, the new UFC champion responded with the following:

Christian Lee says he is the best lightweight in the world. Let him come to the UFC, and there we will show him his level.

Lee is sure that everyone speaks for him, but a tournament between the champions of the two promotions could resolve this dispute:

You ask me as ONE champion and Islam as UFC lightweight champion. Of course, each of us will say that he is the best in the world. Therefore, the only way to solve this problem is to push us into the cage and have a cross-promotion fight. Then we will see which of us is the best.
