Second-ranked UFC welterweight American Colby Covington claims to be the promotion’s former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov I didn’t move up the weight class because I didn’t want to meet him in the octagon.
“He never made it to welterweight because of me. He didn’t want to fight me. He knew I had great style, was a much more versatile fighter, could land takedowns, throw punches, withstand cardio. It’s what I do best. I would put him on the ground. So he and Islam Makhachev must shut up. They all talk,” Covington said, as quoted by Republic World.
Nurmagomedov went 29 fights in his career without suffering a single defeat, he owned the UFC lightweight championship belt. In the last fight in October 2020, the Russian defeated Justin Gaethje by choke. Covington has won 17 fights with three losses.
