Algerian Boxing Federation joins World Boxing after Khelif scandal at 2024 Olympics

The boxing federations of Algeria and Japan have joined the international World Boxing federation, the organization’s press service reports.

Currently, World Boxing has 44 national associations, seven of which became members of the federation after the Paris Olympic Games.

The alternative organization World Boxing was founded by national federations that left the International Boxing Association (IBA). In response to statements by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the possible exclusion of boxing from the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, World Boxing is attempting to gain Olympic recognition and participate in the Olympic tournament.

Algerian Iman Khelif At the Paris Olympics, she won gold in the weight category up to 66 kg. The IBA suspended Khelif from the 2023 World Cup in India for failing to meet the eligibility criteria. Following the gender test, it was proven that the athlete has XY chromosomes. Khelif’s performance at the 2024 Games caused a public outcry.
