The trophy will not be awarded in 2023
UPL President Eugene Wild explained why, following the results of the 2022/23 season, it will not be played Ukrainian Super Cup. The functionary noted that they plan to play the trophy next year.
“From next season, the Cup of Ukraine starts. As you know, the Super Cup is played between the winner of the Ukrainian Championship and the winner of the Ukrainian Cup. Since this season, which ended, we did not have the Cup of Ukraine, so there is no point in holding a match for the Super Cup either. Between whom and with whom should it take place? First and third place of the championship? Or the first and third?” said Wild.
“Yes, we plan that at the end of the upcoming season we will definitely play a match for the Super Bowl. While we are considering several options for exhibition matches. If we manage to do this, it will be good.”
The last draw of the Ukrainian Super Cup took place in September 2021 — Shakhtar defeated Dynamo 3-0. In 2022 and 2023, the trophy was not played due to the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine.
The first preliminary stage of the Ukrainian Cup of the 2023/24 season will tentatively take place on July 29. The base date for the start of the new season in the Ukrainian Premier League is July 29.
