Apparently, the experienced Inter defender will be prevented from playing at Euro 2024 by a groin injury
Defender Inter Francesco Acerbi withdrawn from Italian national team due to pain in the groin.
Tomorrow the Squadra Azzurra will gather at the Coverciano Technical Center, where they will begin preparations for the 2024 European Championship. Let us remind you that 36-year-old Acerbi was included in the extended application of the national team to prepare for the continental championship.
Head coach Luciano Spalletti has already notified Juventus defender Federico Gatti to come to the national team in place of his retired colleague.
Acerbi is a football player with a difficult fate. He started in Pavia, Regina and Genoa. After a successful 2011/12 season with Chievo, he moved to Milan, where he frankly did not play. In the summer of 2013, the football player was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Francesco successfully dealt with the disease, after which he restarted his career in Sassuolo.
At the age of 30, Acerbi became a Lazio player, and at 34 he was promoted to Inter, with whom he reached the Champions League final, and at the end of the 2023/24 campaign he became the champion of Italy. In the season that ended, Francesco played 38 matches for the club, scored two goals and gave three assists. As part of the Italian national team (34 matches, one goal), the defender became the 2020 European champion.
25-year-old Gatti only made it into the Juventus team in 2023, for which he has already played 63 matches and scored six goals. Federico played three matches as part of the Italian national team, only one of which came in the 2024 EURO qualification.
The Italian national team will begin their training camp on the last day of May, after which they will hold several sparring sessions. The Italians will meet Turkey on June 4, after which the coaching staff will announce the final bid for Euro 2024 on June 6. This will be followed by another test match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 9, and the team will go to the European Championships.
Squadra Azzurra will play in Group B of Euro 2024, where its rivals will be Croatia, Spain and Albania. Spalletti’s team starts the tournament with a match against the Albanians on June 15, then will play against Spain (June 20) and Croatia (June 24).
