Squadra Azzurra relinquish European title after losing to Switzerland
Head coach Italian national team Luciano Spallettand commented on his team’s performance at European Championship 2024. The mentor confirmed that he remains at the head of the Azzurra Squadra.
“I tried to rejuvenate the team a little. Since I’m staying, this will be done even more in the future.”
“We also have to be honest when describing our matches: I arrived at a time when a result was urgently needed, and up to a certain point we were good. We failed to succeed in this mini-trip, and yesterday was a match in which we took a step back.”
“By giving space and opportunity to players like Calafiori, important leaders can be found on the pitch, regardless of their experience. And we must follow this path, directly believe that there is potential that manifests itself in the game, in actions, and not in speeches.”
Let us recall that Italy lost to Switzerland (0:2) in the 1/8 finals of the 2024 European Championship. Spalletti’s team conceded two unanswered goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas, who was later recognized as the best player of the match.
Earlier, in the group stage, the Squadra Azzurra won a strong-willed victory over Albania (2:1), suffered a minimal defeat to Spain (0:1) and barely escaped defeat against Croatia (1:1). The Italian team relinquished its title as European champion.
