Netherlands secure comeback win over Turkey in Euro 2024 quarterfinals
Head coach Netherlands national team Ronald Koeman commented on the victory over Turkey (2:1) in the quarterfinals 2024 European Championship.
“It was a great performance. We started well. They started to defend space better after the opening phase. We continued to play like that, but we had to go around their players. Then they started to pick up the pace and went ahead.”
“We had a tough time tonight, but there are no easy games. It was an emotional game and we had a lot of heart. Sometimes we get criticised for not having that compared to other teams. But we had a good second half. We suffered, but it’s a big success to have the opportunity to play in the semi-finals.”
“England have good players, but so do we. We are in the semi-finals of the European Championship – no one expected that. If all goes well, we will play two more games.”
Oranje conceded in the first half after a header from Samet Akaidin. After the break, the Netherlands managed to turn the situation on its head within six minutes. First Stefan de Vrij equalized the score, and in the 76th minute, the defender of the Turkish team Mert Müldür recorded an own goal.
The Netherlands are the last semi-finalists of Euro 2024. Ronald Koeman’s team will play England in the semi-final stage on July 10. Spain and France will play in the other semi-final of the tournament.
