The head coach of the Ukrainian national team talks about the mood in the team after the first match of Euro 2024
Head coach of the Ukrainian national team Sergey Rebrov told what it was like the atmosphere in the locker room after the match lost to Romania (0:3) in the first round of the group stage of Euro 2024.
“At the end of the press conference after the match with Romania, Yarmolenko came up to me and asked: “Maybe we can talk there ourselves as a team.” Because there was a problem, when I went into the locker room after the match, I saw that some players were sitting on their phones and looking at their score, what the fans were writing to them. Who is to blame for this failure? And they are not looking for themselves, but for someone else.”
“That’s probably why Yarmolenko wanted the team to discuss everything themselves. What happened? What are we thinking about? What do we say before the match, how important is this game for all of Ukraine?”
“I always tell the football players: you took the flag of Ukraine, put it on your shoulders – everything is beautiful. But everyone will look not at how you hold the flag, but how you fight for the country on the field. Prapr is beautiful, super, patriotic. But how you love the country, you must pack it on the field.”
The Ukrainian national team took fourth place in Group E at Euro 2024 and failed to advance to the playoffs. The key defeat was the 0:3 defeat to Romania in the first round. For the first time in the history of the European Championship, a team with four points took the last place in its quartet.
According to the specialized portal Transfermarkt, the Ukrainian national team is the team with the most expensive rosterwhich was eliminated from Euro 2024 after the first stage. At the same time, the Ukrainian team is the second youngest team at Euro 2024 to be eliminated after the group stage. The average age of the blue-yellows is 26.4 years.
In Group B1 of the 2024/2025 Nations League, Ukraine will play against the national teams of Albania, the Czech Republic and Georgia. The Ukrainian team will play all six matches in this quartet throughout the autumn of 2024.
