Alexander promised to send part of the funds to help the Ukrainian military
Ukrainian boxer, Olympic champion Paris 2024 Alexander Khizhnyak was awarded a certificate in the amount of 1 million hryvnia from the Poltava community.
In addition, the boxer’s father and trainer, Alexander Khizhnyak Sr., received a certificate for half a million. In return, the champion presented the head of Poltava, Katerina Yamshchikova, with his autographed gloves. Alexander admitted:
“I haven’t had time to plan where I’ll spend these funds. Of course, some part will definitely be spent on support and assistance to our fighters. But I supported them before that. I am grateful to our military, who are protecting our peace and tranquility at the cost of their lives.”
Let us recall that Khizhnyak brought Ukraine its third gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in the 80 kg category. Alexander started in Paris with a strong-willed victory over Philipp Akilov from Hungary. Then the Ukrainian was stronger than the Brazilian Vanderlei Pereira by a unanimous decision. In the semi-finals, Khizhnyak was stronger in the fight with two-time Olympic champion from Cuba Arlen Lopez. And finally, in the decisive fight, the representative of Ukraine defeated Nurbek Oralbay from Kazakhstan by a split decision of the judges.
Oleksandr is the second Ukrainian boxer after Vasyl Lomachenko to win two Olympic medals. At Tokyo 2020, Khizhnyak won silver in the 75 kg weight category. Now he is the first Poltava resident to be awarded an Olympic gold medal.
