Benfica announced its return Bruno Lage for the post of head coach of the team.
The 48-year-old Portuguese previously led Orly from January 2019 to June 2020. Lage won the Portuguese championship and Super Cup with the team. Under his leadership, Benfica repeated its season record for goals scored (103 goals), and the mentor was recognized as the best coach of the championship and coach of the year in Portugal.
Earlier, Benfica President Rui Costa announced the dismissal of Roger Schwidt as head coach. The German specialist has led Benfica since 2022 and won the championship title with the Eagles in the 2022/23 season.
In the 2024/25 season that has just started, the team led by Schmidt has won only two of the four opening matches of the Portuguese championship. In the last round, Benfica saved itself from defeat in an away match against Moreirense (1:1).
Benfica has seven points and is in seventh place in the Primeira Liga. In the next round, the team of Ukrainian Anatoliy Trubin will host Santa Clara on September 14.
