The coin is dedicated to Usik’s victory over Tyson Fury
National Bank of Ukraine released coin in honor of the Ukrainian boxer Alexandra Usika (22-0, 14 KOs).
The issue is dedicated to the Ukrainian’s victory over Tyson Fury in May of this year and Usik’s winning the title of absolute world heavyweight champion.
“The obverse of the coin depicts a traditional Crimean Tatar ornament, symbolizing the Crimean roots of Alexander Usik. This pattern, used in the design of one of the athlete’s images at the battle of views before the fight for the title of absolute world champion, emphasizes the inextricable connection between Crimea and Ukraine.
“On the reverse in the center of the composition there is a stylized image of a champion athlete against the background of the outline of the Motherland monument – a symbol of the indestructibility and strength of the Ukrainian people.”
“At the bottom left and right of the champion’s silhouette are the inscriptions: 05/18/2024 (the date of the fight), ABSOLUTE and UNDISPUTED (the title that the athlete won).
On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat in his professional career on Tyson in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.
Alexander is the second boxer in history after Evander Holyfield, who was the absolute world champion in cruiserweight and heavyweight. Also, the Ukrainian boxer became the third (after Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue) in the era of four prestigious titles to become the absolute champion in two weight categories.
An agreement has been concluded between Usik and Fury for a re-fight. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Alexander and Tyson will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
