Sidorchuk: I will continue to fight for a place in the Westerlo team

The Ukrainian midfielder missed the team’s pre-season training camp and has not yet reached optimal shape

Ukrainian midfielder Westerlo Sergei Sidorchuk said that he intends to see out his contract to the end and will fight for a place in the main team of the Belgian club.

“These have been difficult months for me. Due to participation in Euro 2024, I joined the club later, already during pre-season training. Given my physiological characteristics, this was a significant disadvantage. My age and participation in the European Championship have nothing to do with this – it’s just about how I’m built physically. I need a little more time – both to fully recover and to later regain the lost condition.”

“But I want to help the team, I definitely want to mean something for Westerlo. I needed more time to fully get into shape and reach normal levels. But at that moment the team was doing well, and I lost my place in the squad. I am aware of my current role in the team, but I will not accept it and will continue to fight for a place in the team. I still have a year and a half left on my contract with Westerlo, so I definitely want to change the current situation.”

“Belgian Championship? This tournament gave me new opportunities. I worked hard for a long time to be ready to perform at this level. It was physically difficult to play 90 minutes straight away, but in the end I began to feel comfortable. Of course, now I have lost the rhythm of the game, but hopefully I won’t have to wait so long for the next opportunity to fully play in the Belgian championship.”

“As for life in Belgium, it is incredibly good here. My family has everything they need here. My wife and children, who go to international school, are happy.”

Sidorchuk has been performing in Westerlo since last summer. The Ukrainian midfielder’s contract with the Belgians runs until 2026.

This season, the 33-year-old midfielder has played only three matches for the club in all competitions, scoring one assist. Sergei took part in the match with Slovakia (2:1) at Euro 2024. In the last matches of the Nations League, the footballer was not included in the national team’s roster.

Westerlo ranks eighth in the Belgian Jupile League. In the next match, Sidorchuk’s team will meet with Dender on November 1. The match starts at 21:45.
