1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneum celebrated the 25th anniversary of the title by testing last year’s Formula 1 car at Monza. Alpine gave him the A521 that Esteban Ocon won in the Hungarian Grand Prix, and Canal+ made a video of it that will be shown on French TV this weekend.
His race engineer, as in 2004, was Alan Permain, and Esteban Ocon became an instructor, who spoke about the features of driving a car with a modern power plant. The 51-year-old Canadian did the rest himself, with a good time and quite a bit behind last year’s Italian Grand Prix schedule.
Jacques Villeneuve: “Flying the 2021 Alpine F1 at Monza was incredible. The last time I got behind the wheel of Formula 1 was in 2006 and I have to say that modern cars are incredibly fast cornering.
It was great working with the engineers and the team, I took it very seriously – and I remembered a lot. In 2004 I drove three races for the team and saw several familiar faces in the pits.
The chance to be behind the wheel of Formula 1 at the age of 50 is extremely rare, I really enjoyed the time I spent in the pits and on the track. It will remain in my memory forever.”
