Horner: Andretti Cadillac worth buying current team

In an interview with Racer, Red Bull Racing head Christian Horner once again explained why most teams do not support the Andretti Cadillac project in Formula 1 – and how he sees this situation…

Christian Horner: “Andretti is a great brand, it’s a great team. What Mario has achieved in Formula 1, also as an American, is fantastic. It’s clear that GM and Cadillac will add value to our sport – I don’t think that’s up for debate.

But as so often, it boils down to the question, “Who’s going to pay for that?” And you can assume that if the teams have to pay, or receive less prize money as a result, it probably doesn’t suit them.

The two teams (McLaren and Alpine) that now support Andretti Cadillac will either work with them in the US or supply them with engines. The other eight say, “Well, wait, why give away our prize money?”

Then the Liberty Media guys say: “We are not going to pay, we are happy with ten healthy teams. After all, with the arrival of the eleventh team, a lot will have to change: boxes, logistics, campers. I’m sure they would prefer an Audi model if they come in and buy an existing team.

By adding another team or two, you devalue the current 10 franchises, which are now clearly overpriced, especially at the bottom of the grid.

I hope a solution is found. If they can buy one of the existing teams, we are happy to welcome these great brands to F1.”
