For the second weekend in a row, Alfa Romeo finished with no points earned – at Spielberg, Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou finished 11th and 14th. The team made no secret of their disappointment with this result.
Frederic Vasseur, Team Principal: “It was a tough weekend for us, but we were close to a point despite everything that had happened – that shows our team spirit. Valtteri started from the pit lane, while Zhou started the race in thirteenth position. We knew it would be difficult to get a good result, but we almost succeeded.
The race was intense with constant fighting which was a great advertisement for our sport. Our team almost bounced back, but on the last lap Fernando Alonso had a huge tire advantage, so Valtteri couldn’t resist. Zhou’s penalty robbed him of his chance for points.
We are disappointed to leave Austria without points, but we will regroup and try to score points during the round in France.”
Valtteri Bottas (11th): “I was hoping for points – that was the goal, so it’s a shame to finish just outside the top ten. On the last lap Fernando closed the gap very quickly on a new set of tires and overtook me.
We also had a good race, also in terms of strategy. We tried our best, taking into account the starting position, but the car lacked speed, especially in the corners. In any case, we managed to regain positions from the pit lane after the start, which is positive.
We have to keep moving forward because other teams are not standing still. I think the circuit in France suits our car better. We need to qualify for higher positions to maximize our chances on Sunday.”
Guanyu Zhou (14th): “This weekend the car had potential, so I’m not happy with the result. We looked strong in the sprint, but today in the first half of the race we got stuck in a group of cars and then the hard tire problems started.
After the switch to Medium it became much easier – I felt more competitive, but it was already too late to qualify for points. The pace in the sprint and in the closing laps of the race can be considered a positive result of the weekend, as well as the distance covered, which will help me gain experience.
I had some interesting fights, I liked the tight fight, but I wanted more from this weekend. †
