Max Verstappen: We didn’t have the strongest weekend

The race in Miami was the first of the season in which Max Verstappen reached the finish, but did not win. During the Florida round, the Red Bull Racing driver achieved the second fastest time and admitted he could not keep up with Lando Norris when the McLaren driver switched to hard tires.

Sergio Perez, Max’s teammate, finished fifth, repeating his worst result of the season.

Max Verstappen (2nd): “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose – I think we’re all used to that in racing. Today we had a hard time. On Medium tires the car didn’t handle so well, but I pulled away from my rivals, although not as quickly as I would have liked. Then I made a pit stop and when they told me how fast the McLaren drivers were doing their laps, I thought: “Wow! It’s pretty fast.”

Once they switched to Hard they had better pace, especially Lando – he just flew. The last part turned out to be incredibly tough for me, but if the day we finished second is considered bad, then I agree with such a bad day.

I’m very happy for Lando. He had waited a long time for this victory and it certainly wouldn’t be his last. He certainly deserved this result today.

I had problems with the grip of all four wheels, understeer was replaced by oversteer and we need to understand the reasons.

They’ve brought new things to McLaren and they seem to have worked, so we have some work to do too. In terms of race pace we didn’t have the strongest weekend, but the team will analyze everything and come back stronger for the next round.”
