In Canada, George Russell gave Mercedes its first podium of the season, finishing third. Team boss Toto Wolff was pleased with the result, but noted that Russell could have avoided some mistakes.
Toto Wolff: “At one point, when George on the Hard tires overtook the leader and showed good pace, we thought for a moment that a victory would be possible, but in the end we shouldn’t be greedy.
On the one hand, George was great, but on the other hand, he could have avoided one or two mistakes. I don’t think he had any chance to overtake Oscar Piastri in that corner. He is good at overtaking because he is not afraid to take risks and fights hard, but that particular overtaking attempt was too ambitious and cost him his position. Granted, he won back later.
I think second place was possible. I don’t know why Lando Norris’ pace dropped, maybe he had problems, but on the other hand the result could have been different for George.
However, it doesn’t matter what it could have been. It is important that we provide the drivers with a fast car. At the end of the weekend we have to think positively because the team has taken a real step forward and the direction of the car’s development is the right one.”
