George Russell praised the quality of the Mercedes team for its unity, which has made it so competitive that it is winning races again.
George Russell: “The team stayed united, we all stayed together, despite the fact that there were no major changes in the organisational structure of Mercedes. You have to give credit to Toto Wolff for believing in people and just giving them the opportunity to continue doing what they are good at. I think that is what sets our team apart from many others.
It seems like we’re doing really well at the moment, so hopefully we can continue like this.”
Despite victories in Austria and Britain, Mercedes is still 3rd in the Constructors’ Championship, although it has almost overtaken Ferrari, and Russell is 7th in the individual standings and has more than half as many points as championship leader Max Verstappen.
“Max is already way ahead and Lando Noris is confident of finishing second,” George continued. “But I think our goal for the rest of the season is to win as many races as possible. Obviously we’ve closed the gap considerably and have been successful in two of the last four races.
But at the same time Max also had two victories, came second once and would also take second place in Austria. So it can’t be said that Red Bull is not in the best shape at the moment. Overall, we are definitely closer to the leaders than ever before. We will see how the Hungarian weekend and then the Spa round go, and I think that if we manage to perform well on these two circuits, we will be fast everywhere.”
