In Hungary, Lando Norris took eight points from Max Verstappen and is now seventy-six points behind the championship leader. McLaren boss Andrea Stella said the team will continue to offer equal support to its drivers, but if Lando has a realistic chance of winning the title at the end of the season, the team will prioritise him and make him number one.
Andrea Stella: “We are lucky to have riders like Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris for the team, so we don’t have to decide who is number one and who is number two. This simplifies a lot, also for me.
Our approach is that the riders fight fairly and that each of them gets the results they deserve. We guarantee a similar approach. If there are still a few races to go before the end of the season, and if one of our riders has a serious chance of winning the title, then we might reconsider our approach.
I expect that in this situation another rider will come to me and say: “If you need my help to help your teammate fight for the title, I am ready.”
