Russell: I eat pizza in the evening so I don’t feel underweight!

George Russell set the third fastest time in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver only lost to his rivals from McLaren and said immediately after the session that the result was even better than he expected.

Lewis Hamilton improved his time, but not his place, in the decisive attempt and will start the race sixth.

George Russel (3rd): “Excellent qualifying. Third place is even a bit better than I expected after the difficult first and second sessions. Fortunately, we were able to save the tyres for the last attempt and we didn’t lose much to McLaren. Yes, they are fast at the moment, but we are working hard to close the gap. I am very happy with third place.

I think it’s going to be a tough race, but it’s great for Formula 1. We all expected this kind of battle and now we know that if we do well we have a chance to win, so I’m excited about the race.

I plan on eating pizza tonight to recharge and gain some extra weight so I won’t be underweight tomorrow! I hope we can fight for a good result.”

Lewis Hamilton (6th): “I am furious, absolutely furious. I could have been on pole, at least from the front row, but I didn’t manage that.

In the first corner I lost one and a half tenths, in the last another tenth. I have no one to blame but myself. Qualifying has been my weak point for a while and I don’t understand why. I will keep trying.

I’ll fool myself for the next few hours but I have to move on. Our car is fast on race distance and the team did a great job. The car feels better and the team deserves more. Maybe they’ll get it with Kimi [Антонелли]”
