On the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri attacked his teammate in turn four and took the lead in the race. For Lando Norris, such a maneuver came as a surprise, and after the finish, McLaren boss Andrea Stella said that the team would investigate the overtaking move.
Andrea Stella: “From the point of view of our expectations of the drivers’ actions and the overtaking itself, we will all analyse the overtaking together in a calm atmosphere and assess the situation. And if it turns out that we can learn something, we will take it into account for the future.
We are disappointed with the result, because we had the pace to win. During the race there was a borderline situation between one and two pit stops. Most of them opted for a two-stop strategy. I think it was a bit easier for Leclerc to make one pit stop because he was behind us.
As for us, Lando locked up the left front wheel, the tire was bad and it was clear that he had two pit stops. Oscar was more on the edge, but both he and we had doubts, so we opted for two pit stops.
“We thought we had enough time to regain the lead, but Ferrari did a great job. Leclerc drove very well. We have to admit that the rivals were able to implement the one-pit strategy. Great performance from Ferrari, but we also had a strong performance. Overall, a very positive weekend.”
