Ocon knew nothing about Haas’s upcoming partnership with Toyota

Haas boss Ayo Komatsu said that when he negotiated with Esteban Ocon, he did not inform the French driver about the impending deal with Toyota. This is due to the fact that at the time of signing the contract with Ocon, Komatsu was not yet confident that the deal with the Japanese car manufacturer would take place.

Ayo Komatsu: “I told Esteban that we have a development plan that will move the team forward and make reasonable progress, if you like. But when we agreed on the final details of the contract with Esteban, and this was in the context of the Austrian Grand Prix, it was too early to guarantee him anything.

I didn’t want to tell him something I wasn’t sure about at the time. I didn’t want to be in a situation where I promised him something, he signed a contract, and three months later I had to tell him, “Sorry, buddy, I couldn’t make a deal.”

Esteban signed the contract knowing that we had a vision of how to develop the team. Instead of telling him about a specific technical collaboration, I told him how we wanted to develop the team, and he fully supported the idea.”
