Qualifying in Qatar proved successful for Sauber; only for the second time this season both team drivers qualified for the second part. Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou hope that they can earn their first points of the season thanks to the relatively high starting position.
Guanyu Zhou (12th): “Good day. I think this is my best qualifying of the season and I’m happy that the new bottom has allowed us to take a step in the right direction.
In the sprint I started on Soft, which gives us more strategic options for Sunday’s race. Obviously the Soft composition didn’t work, but we were still able to gather useful information.
The team did a good job in qualifying, giving me a well-balanced car that allowed me to do a good lap, but there is still a lot to be done. It is important to focus on the race and do everything you can to get a good result.”
Valtteri Bottas (13th): “I’m quite happy with the team’s performance today in the sprint and qualifying. It has been a very long time since we had such favorable positions at the start. I hope we can translate that into a good result.
The sprint was not very eventful. I decided on my position at the start, but then everything calmed down quite quickly. In any case, we have seen that it is possible to stay ahead of the competition in the race.
I started qualifying with confidence and expected to fight for a place in the top ten. However, the balance of the car did not change for the better compared to Friday and this affected the stability of the car during the session.
In any case, the team has a good chance of competing for points in the race and that is the most important thing.”
