Riccardo: Too bad everything ended so stupid

In every way, the end of the Italian Grand Prix, while promising interesting, was spoiled by the fact that the closing laps of the pack followed the safety car, and the race ended in this mode.

Race management decided to leave the safety car on track until the last lap as work on the evacuation of Daniel Ricciardo’s faulty car was delayed. Commenting on this situation, Australian racer McLaren did not hide that he was upset.

Daniel Riccardo: “I don’t know exactly what happened to the car, but simply put, everything just went out. I was going through the Lesmo 1 corner in 4th gear and suddenly the engine cut out immediately, and of course the gearbox got stuck and I couldn’t shift to neutral.

There was no other option but to try to stop as soon as possible, because I thought it would be safer that way. But when I got out of the cockpit, I even found it difficult to find an opening in the gates to exit the track.

I was surprised that there was no such opening anywhere near – maybe I slipped through trying to get out of the way. I couldn’t find it until after the race ended behind the safety car.

I haven’t had the opportunity to behave differently, even if I wanted to. Too bad it ended up being so stupid. I had a good start from the second row, I was in third position and it was great. If the race had ended after the first lap, I would have climbed onto the podium!

But alas, we didn’t have enough pace to stay ahead, although I tried. I tried to stop Pierre Gasly’s attack, but he was clearly faster. Although I am happy that I was able to stop him almost the entire race. At the same time, I understand how angry he was. On these machines you can get close to the opponent, but it is still difficult to overtake.

I did everything in my power, trying not to make a mistake, but my pace wasn’t with me and it was really hard to attack. From a sporting point of view, the 2022 season is unfortunately not going well for me, but that’s the way it is.”
