British driver Callum Ilott will replace Robert Kubica as Alfa Romeo’s reserve driver at the Miami Grand Prix. Kubica was unable to reach Florida as he competes in the second leg of the FIA WEC season in Spa this weekend.
Ilott was already Alfa Romeo’s reserve driver last year and took part in the practice rounds in Portugal and Austria on Friday.
“Last year we worked with Callum, so he’s already part of the team,” Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur said in Miami. “He is not familiar with the new car, but he knows the team very well and has done a good job in the past.
He has his own schedule for the season so we will only invite him to individual races. The fact that Callum is now in the US also influenced our decision. At some point, Robert will be unavailable, and Callum will replace him. We don’t even need a contract, he’s part of the family.”
