IIHF won’t be able to cancel KHL Legionnaires’ contracts until 2023

International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) press officer Adam Steiss says the organization can help anyone who wants to leave KHL but not this year.

— The IIHF has made this decision [об отстранении России и Белоруссии от международных соревнований] out of concern for the safety and well-being of players, staff, media and spectators, and this decision remains in place for the time being, Expressen quotes Steiss. The situation will be reviewed by the Board of Directors during the next season and the status of countries’ participation will be reviewed at the IIHF Annual Congress in May 2023.

“A lot of foreign players in the teams were looking for help to be able to terminate their contracts and leave the teams. Why can’t the federation help them?

– The Federation has resolved each specific issue in each specific case within the framework of the IIHF transfer regulations.

The Federation does not have the power to cancel a valid contract. The federation must ensure that all transfers are made in accordance with the transfer regulations. They cannot be modified without the prior approval of the organization’s congress. If there is a problem, this could lead to legal action against the federation.

Transfer regulations are approved by the IIHF Congress and can only be changed with the consent of the Congress, not the organization’s Board of Directors. The next possible time for this is during the federation’s semi-annual congress in September 2023.

Despite the fact that the teams are not eligible to participate in the World Championship, the national hockey associations of Russia and Belarus will remain members of the IIHF, with the right to vote at the organization’s congress.

Earlier, the IIHF announced that the national teams of Russia and Belarus, after the lifting of sanctions, will play in the first division of the World Cup, but the two teams will return to the system at the earliest in the 2023 season. /24.
