Olympic figure skating champion Anna Shcherbakova became the winner of the National Sports Award in the nomination “Sportswoman of the Year”.
The solemn ceremony takes place on Wednesday at the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace in Moscow.
In the voting, Shcherbakova was ahead of Olympic champion skier Natalya Nepryaeva and two-time Olympic shooting champion Vitalina Batsarashkina.
“I want to thank you for the honor of receiving such a high award. We have many athletes who are the pride of our country, I bow to them, – said Shcherbakova.
The National Sports Prize is one of the main sports prizes in Russia. The Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, together with fans and experts, summarizes and names the best among 11 nominations. There are 18 winners in total.
The National Sports Prize Expert Council includes Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, State Duma Deputy, three-time Olympic champion in figure skating Irina Rodnina, President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev, deputy of the State Duma, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova and other sports officials and titled athletes.
The title of laureate and a prize of 1 million rubles are awarded to athletes, coaches, media representatives and constituent entities of the Federation, thanks to which sport is becoming increasingly popular in Russia and attracts the attention of millions of people . Also, the infrastructural transformations of Russian sport are noted.
