Kostomarov was placed in a medically induced coma to avoid death, says MD

Doctor of Medical Sciences Andrey Shestakov commented on the doctors’ decision to present the skater Roman Kostomarova in a medical coma.

More than a week ago, Kostomarov suffered a stroke, after which he was put into a drug-induced sleep. Kostomarov has been under medical supervision since January. It was previously reported that the 46-year-old figure skater had his foot amputated in order to remove the necrosis and stop the cell death process. Later, cases of amputation of hands were reported.

– Medical coma today is an ordinary phenomenon that does not have serious consequences. Of course, it all depends on the patient’s condition before the introduction into a coma. But the procedure itself in modern medicine is popular and helps save a person’s life. Introduced into a medical coma for serious injuries or illnesses to stifle a person’s reflexes. It’s just that they do not inject into a medical coma, which means that there were reasons why the normal activity of the patient’s body would lead to death. An artificial coma is stressful for the body, but it is a necessary measure. Of course, it is important to understand in time when it is necessary to bring a person out of this state, so as not to harm him even more. I think at Kommunarka they know what they are doing – they are great professionals. Roman should be out of a medically induced coma with no problems, no need to worry.

Each organism reacts differently to an artificial coma, respectively, and the time to come out of it is different for everyone. The most important thing in the process of awakening is the transition of the functioning of the body in a coma and in a normal state. Everything should be done gradually and carefully, – Sport24 quotes Shestakov.

Kostomarov, along with Tatyana Navka, won the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin in ice dancing. In addition, the athletes are twice world champions (2004, 2005) and three times winners of the European Championships (2004, 2005, 2006).
