Skier Kuleshova: “Russia’s withdrawal from tournaments did not bother me, I came back to the call of my heart”

Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing Anastasia Kuleshova said she had returned to professional sport “at the call of her heart”, despite the withdrawal of Russian athletes from international competitions.

For the 28-year-old skier, the current season was the first full season after the birth of her daughter. Kuleshova at the last Russian championship won the 30 km mass start, and also became a bronze medalist in the skiathlon and relay race.

– When I told Elena Vyalba that I would miss the season, she warned: “Give birth, and we will wait for you!” I thanked her and told her that I would try to come back. So I came back, two years later: I wanted to devote as much time as possible to the child, and not go to training camp. In addition, the first year of life is a very important period for the baby.

– You resumed training last summer, when Russia had already been suspended from competitions.

– It didn’t bother me at all. I came back at the call of my heart, because I realized that I wanted to continue my skiing career. The rest didn’t matter. So far, according to my feelings, I have not completely regained the form I had before going on maternity leave, but thanks to the Russian competitions, I am gaining strength. At least I hope that’s the case.

Anyone who has raced at the highest international level wants to go back there and compete with the strongest in the world. We will wait, work and hope,” quotes the information service of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Kuleshova.

The last stage of the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Cup will take place from April 7 to 9 in Kirovsk (Murmansk region). Watch live broadcasts of competitions on the channel, as well as on the matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru websites.
