The American lost to the Ukrainian champion in 2017 in the heavyweight division
American boxer Michael Hunter (22-1-2, 16 KO) said that he would like to fight again with the absolute world heavyweight champion Alexander Usik.
“I would like to fight Usyk again. In our first fight I did not achieve results. I had problems outside the ring. If you watch the tape of this fight, you will see that on the night of the fight I weighed less than at the weigh-in due to dehydration. So a lot of mistakes happened outside the ring, that’s where the fight was won.”
“Usyk’s main quality is discipline. He’s fast, but not too fast. It doesn’t hit very hard, but it’s also noticeable. He doesn’t really do anything great, but he remains disciplined and true to himself. He has good movement. And very little ego at the right time.”
“I think it takes a lot of discipline. Many fights are lost because of your ego. When a person tries to beat the speed of someone who is faster than him. We have a law in boxing: you fight boxers and you box fighters.”
Hunter met with Usyk in 2017, claiming the WBO heavyweight belt, which the Ukrainian defended. Alexander won by unanimous decision.
Hunter had his last fight in March, defeating Mexican Ignacio Esparza by technical knockout. The American’s next fight will take place on June 7 against Cassius Cheney.
Usik defeated Tyson Fury in his last fight and won the title of absolute heavyweight champion. The second fight between Usik and Fury will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
