“The coach called and said: ‘There is a boy, come on.'” Figure skater Shinkarenko told how she teamed up with Antonov

Figure skaters Alexandra Shinkarenko and Mikhail Antonov after performing in rhythm dance at the Moscow championship, they told how they got together and prepared for the season in a short time.

On Tuesday, the duo took sixth place in rhythm dance at the Moscow Championship with a score of 58.26 points. In July, Shinkarenko and Antonov began working under coach Anzhelika Krylova.

– What emotions?

Shinkarenko: I’m very happy to get on the ice so quickly. We’ve only been a couple for two months. I am very happy to be here today. Of course, everything is very abrupt, fast and unexpected.

— How did the couple come together and did you manage to get ready so quickly?

Shinkarenko: I don’t know, it’s luck, chance, destiny. Anzhelika Alekseevna called and said: “I have a boy, it seems that the couple is breaking up, come, I will look at you.” I came to see, took a look around and Anzhelika Alekseevna told me to come on Monday. From the first day, everything went well. Of course, two months is very short and sometimes it can be difficult to understand each other’s movements, but we have the same skating style and we adapted straight away.

—Are there any problems with the technology?

Shinkarenko: Anzhelika Alekseevna works with us so that we move in the same direction.

Antonov: I think in such a short period of time, like a month and a half, this is an achievement for us. Two weeks later, we had already put together a rhythm dance rental. Sasha and I, of course, “died” on the ice. Anjelika Alekseevna immediately told us: “We are skating. We work. You don’t rest anymore.” (Laughs). We prepared at a breakneck pace, but we wanted it ourselves.

—Aren’t you afraid of burning out?

Shinkarenko: No. It’s a lifetime’s work.

— What are your plans for the season?

Shinkarenko: Do a free dance tomorrow.

Antonov: Get to the Grand Prix stages, qualify for the Russian Championship. Overall everything is great. I’m glad it happened with Sasha.

— What goals do you set for the season?

Shinkarenko: Skate, compete, show off as much as possible now, have fun.

Antonov: Until now we do not feel, we do not understand. I would like to feel as much as possible this season so that in the future there is a reserve of professionalism. Sasha tried the master’s programs and when she heard that there were ten elements on the ice, she was shocked. There are no grandiose goals this season. Skate and be happy with the way we skate. And so that Anzhelika Alekseevna would be happy with everything and say that we are great.

In June, we learned of the breakup of the duo Alexander Shinkarenko/Valery Angelopol. The athletes began working together at the Evgeni Plushenko Academy in January. Antonov previously played in tandem with Polina Usova.
