“It’s terrible to erase memory and history like this. They sent me a video, but it hurts to watch it ”- gymnast Polstyanaya on the demolition of the Monument to the Liberators of Riga

Gymnast representing Latvia Elisabeth Polstyanaya on the air of the program “There is a theme!” responded to the decision of the authorities of Riga to demolish the Monument to the Liberators of the city.

A few days ago, the last element of the Monument to the Liberators, a 79-meter obelisk, was dismantled in Riga’s Victory Park. The local authorities explain the demolition of the monument by the eradication of the Soviet heritage.

– We were in Latvia at that time, of course, we discussed it with our family. In fact, it’s terrible. How is it possible? In our family, May 9 is one of the main holidays, and it seems to me that there are things that just can’t be addressed, and it’s terrible to erase memory and history like that. They sent me a video, I didn’t watch it because it hurts, Poltyanaya said.

Earlier, 19-year-old Polstyanaya said she was not allowed to participate in the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Bulgaria. The athlete was born in Latvia, but grew up in Russia. She obtained Latvian citizenship in 2018 and has since represented the country in international competitions. The gymnast admitted that she had been given an ultimatum: to give up Russian citizenship in exchange for performances at the World Championships. On August 17, the athlete refused to continue his career in Latvia.
